Studio Ghibli, Japanese Food Culture & SHIKI – A Tribute to the Magic of Craftsmanship and Culinary Joy

Studio Ghibli captivates not only with breathtaking hand-drawn animation, but also with a deep appreciation for food as an art form. In films like Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro, food is never portrayed as just a meal — it becomes an expression of care, community, and harmony with nature. The meticulously animated dishes reflect the essence of Japanese food culture: simplicity, seasonality, and respect for the ingredients.

Often, the protagonist eats during moments of uncertainty or sadness. Food becomes a ritual of grounding, comfort, and stability — something that provides support when the world around the characters begins to waver.

Food in the Ghibli universe reveals not only what the characters eat, but how they live: with respect, in connection with nature, and with gratitude for the gifts of the earth. Even the smallest snack is celebrated — a reflection of the Japanese spirit, which finds mindfulness in everyday things.

At SHIKI, we are also inspired by this philosophy. Many of our chefs, service team members, and guests share a love for Ghibli films, which continue to enchant us with their blend of craftsmanship, aesthetics, and culinary delight. When the wave of AI-generated Ghibli-style images appeared, we couldn’t resist experimenting with this magical visual language ourselves. Still, for us, the original — the hand-drawn world of Hayao Miyazaki — remains unmatched.

Sommelier’s Choice for SHIKI Sushi

Hakurakusei (“the White Horse”) Junmai Ginjo from Miyagi is made from the indigenous rice variety Kura no Hana. With its mineral notes and elegant salinity, it is an ideal pairing for sushi. Its delicate fruit aromas support the fish without overpowering it. Orchard fruit notes and minerality combined with the elegance of our top-quality sushi — a perfect harmony.
